PB UI - Better support for smart quotes & special characters
Filed on behalf of the Newsroom. Apologies in advance but I feel I have to ask. When users change content, can dumb quotes be converted to smart quotes automatically?
First off, smart quotes. We’re talking about these four characters: “ ‘ ’ ”
My logic:
- When a single or double quote mark is typed o at the start of a line, o OR at the start of a paragraph, o OR after a space, THEN: use the LEFT (open quote) version. i.e., “ or ‘
- When a single or double quote mark is typed after any other character, THEN: use the RIGHT (close quote) version. i.e., ” or ’
We’re well aware that there will be cases when this logic would not produce the desired result. Here are some examples: - Go get ’em! - A child of the ’90s - Rock ’n’ roll - ’Tis the season
You may see a pattern: The problem arises when we want the right single quote mark (an apostrophe) to appear at the start of a word or line.
To get around it, a button for these specific characters would be wonderful. The most critical is this one: ’
