To empower editors to edit their own author profiles, we need a log of the changes: Who did what and when? Otherwise, with the current permission settings, editor A could delete the profile of editor B and we could not tell afterwards that it was A.

I second this. The lack of visibility is making it incredibly difficult to debug and investigate issues and correlate any change that is occurring in any environment.
Please run this up the chain to be added to the roadmap :-)
