Ideas for Arc XP

please give some indication that persists for empty lines

it is difficult to see where there are actual blank lines in the text of the Compose tab - often resulting in many lines of white space at the end of an article before the tagline appears. Please add a paragraph symbol or something to indicate that there are actual blank lines there that should be deleted. The white space at the bottom of the text does not indicate whether there are real blank lines there.

Hi Lynda - appreciate the feedback. Sorry to hear that the feature does not work for your use case.

Unfortunately, the feature you requested is not something we are looking to add in the near future. However, there are 2 more suggestions to address the original problem you are facing:

    1. Having the spaces stripped in the front end

    2. Using the preview link before publishing to check for undesired blank spaces

    Thanks,

    Larry

After discussing this with the users, they would not want to enable this setting. It would be disconcerting to the user to have save keep closing up spaces that they intentionally want to be there while they are writing/editing. And this would also remove the possibility of intentionally wanting a line of white space. A bounding box around the text, a line at the bottom of the text or some indication that there are blank lines is preferable to automatically stripping out the blank lines.

Hi Lynda - it happens on save. Based on your example if you save and go back to the story, Composer will have cleaned up the empty spaces for you. For the use case you outlined above, we recommend using placeholder text (i.e. "quote") and using the "New Comment" feature as a reminder that a quote is still needed in a particular part of a story.

Please also note that after you hit save, the UI will not reflect the clean up of empty spaces. You will need to refresh the page.

That seems promising - when does that removal happen? When the story is published or updated? For example, if I'm typing a story and put in some empty spaces waiting for a quote from a source, can I save the story and come back and the empty spaces are still there? OR will they be stripped out when I save the story?

Hi Lynda - although it is not the exact solution you are recommending, we do provide the ability for you to ensure that blank lines are not removed, through a setting in Composer:

Please let me know if that helps and I can mark as "Already exists". Thanks!
