This is related to SB-I-491 and the fact that the author byline is dynamically generated when a story is read and the data is not stored in the ANS data..
The case for this is someone gets married. Their old name should remain on past stories but their new name should be displayed on future stories. And both old and new stories should be displayed on their author page.
The doc in ALC walks you through this process using the slug field and it works for everything EXCEPT the byline (and this is clearly stated). So really there is no way to do this name change correctly. Either you live with an incorrect byline on older stories or you create a new author with the new name and you lose all listings of older stories on the author page.
