It would be useful if we could add custom rewrite rules. Instead of having to add multiple resolvers. Also if you are trying to point multiple URL's to a page you have to duplicate the page or convert it to a template and have multiple resolvers again. This also would make migrating from other systems easier.

Rewrites (or simpler terms aliases) makes sense, for both pages as well as resolvers. In resolvers case, allowing multiple regex patterns for a single resolver, it can also help simplify the complexity of regex patterns your team has to define.
