Ideas for Arc XP

Ability For Site-Specific Block Override on Multi-Site Distributed Pages

We are seeking an ability to have a site-specific block/feature on a page that is shared with multiple sites.

For example, we may have a /news/ site page that has the same layout across multiple sites. In other words, it is one site page entry in PageBuilder Editor that is accessible on All Sites.

We're looking to see if a specific location on this globally-shared page can have unique content that is specific to the site. For example, this could be HTML code that is specific for Site A, and then HTML code specific for Site B.

Below is a visual way to think of this for a site page on multiple sites (just the one page):

  • Open site page and choose Site A from dropdown list, see custom block for Site A, but layout for everything else is the same.

  • Open site page and choose Site B from dropdown list, see custom block for Site B, but layout for everything else is the same.

  • Open site page and choose Site C from dropdown list, see custom block for Site C, but layout for everything else is the same.

  • Any layout changes impact all sites, except the custom blocks for individual stations.

Here is a visual way of how this is currently done, with three unique site pages:

  • Site A Page (page one): Open site page, add custom block for Site A. Layout changes must be made on each individual page.

  • Site B Page (page two): Clone Site A Page as a new page, add custom block for Site B. Layout changes must be made for both pages for Site A and Site B.

  • Site C Page (page three): Clone Site A Page as a new page, add custom block for Site C. Layout changes must be made for every page for Site A, Site B and Site C.

  • In other words, three individual pages are created and maintained for the above scenario, instead of just one.

This feature request would avoid having to have multiple site pages, despite mostly the same layout across them both. The only difference would be that specific block of content. This would also make long-term maintence of site pages much easier, as it is easier to maintain 1 site page versus 5 site pages with a similar layout, for example.

To clarify, this is different from the Linking feature, as that allows you to use a block or chain across different site pages with the same settings. What I'm seeking is a way to implement a block that is unique in the globally-shared layout based on the site it is on.

Another way to think of this is you could have a site pages that is on All Sites, but the difference between each site is it loads in different content based on the site it is on. That is essentially what I'm seeking here, but to be able to do this with custom HTML code that loads on whichever site it needs to.

If there are any additional questions I can help answer about this, if this feature already exists or if this is too complex to implement, please let me know. Thanks!

    Hi Katherine,

Thanks for following up! We are hoping to have a global page (for all sites) that has the same layout. But on this page, we wish to have one part of it be customized individually for each site. It's almost like that part of the page is separated from the shared layout, and everything else remains in place. Changes can be made to that specific area, while everything else on the page is maintained on a shared layout.

We sometimes like to embed custom HTML on pages with similar layouts, but they need to be unique based on the individual site. This results in us cloning the same layout for multiple sites, despite them all having the same layout. It's just that custom HTML code block that is different for every site.

Please let me know if this helps clarify what is being sought for this Arc Idea. If this idea seems overly complex, please let us know.

    Thank you!

Hi Troy, Thanks for your idea. I'm wondering if you could provide a bit more information-- specifically, the block and what element would be rendered differently across each site? Thank you! Katherine
