Format Description Text in 'Promo Content' of Websked Collection

The editorial team would like the ability to format the text in the 'Description' field of the 'Edit promo content' window of Websked Collections. This would allow the business to make better use of this feature on our homepage.

Formatting options desired (in priority order):

  • line breaks

  • bullet points

  • hyperlinks

  • bold

  • italics

  • number lists

    Hi Natalie,

Thanks for providing the detail. I understand now what you're trying to do and your Site Section solution is smart.

As simple as it sounds on the surface, adding the formatting to the Description Text in Promo Content is a lot trickier under the hood.

Nevertheless, I have long-term plans for improving Collections across the board, so I'm going to keep track of this idea as we start gathering research.

    Thanks again,
    Stuart

    Hi Stuart,

We are not formatting the Description field in Composer, nor do we want to. The benefit of being able to format the Description field on a collection level is we could display text differently on our homepage.

I've attached a photo of the kind of thing we're trying to achieve with this. We've built a power up called "Key Insights" where we format a summary of key article points into bullets. This is displayed on the article page, but we'd also like to display it on the homepage where the article is pinned.

As formatting descriptions in the edit promo content window isn't a feature of Collections, we're actually moving away from curating our homepage with Collections and are moving to a Site Section driven method of curation. Reason being, the power up information isn't included in the Collections API, only in the related content API. To be able to pull this information in and use Collections to curate, we'd have to do an additional call to the related content API, which we'd like to avoid given our focus on page performance for SEO. Moving to Site Section curation only requires one API call since all the information we need to pull into the homepage is already included. If we had the ability to format the description text to mimic our styling of the bullet point Key Insights, we could have the editorial team manually add the information to the Collection placement.

    Hope this helps,

    Natalie

    Hi Natalie,

Thank you for submitting this idea. Would you clarify something for me: are you formatting the Description field in Composer? That field is set up to be a single text string.

    Please let me know. Thanks!
