I just filed this request as an ACS request for the third time and was told that this aspect of Photo Center is working as intended. In earilier Arc IDEA ANG- I-27 The "Appears in" record should show a complete record of everywhere a photo is being used. On this ticket, Angela Wong, former Product Manager responsible for Composer and Anglerfish commented on Feb 20, 2019: "We do have plans to expand these records." and the idea has status of PLANNED. That suggests planned intent for this, but no further news on that idea.
Since the earlier idea was filed, appearance in Image Galleries has been added, but the most frequent placement of photos - in the Featured Media position at the top of stories -is still not included.
This has become even more of an issue for us since the number of fields that are included in the scope of Composer searches was drastically reduced sometime last week, without prior announcement. Our photographers regularly searched on their names in Composer to find the use of their photos on stories. This no longer works as the field containing their name is no longer included in Composer search scope.
The workaround for this is to search for their name in Photo Center, then find the stories that photos are used on by the headline links under "Appears On' on the Edit Image Detail Page. This workaround is incomplete untl Featured Media placements are included under "Appears On"
Please let me know if you need any further information on this.
Thanks,
Ian

another use case:
I also want to point out that we at the Boston Globe are experiencing a large amount of "published" wire photos and are trying to determine which ones are actually used - not being able to see if they are used as Featured Media seriously affects our clean-up effort and resulted in us deleting some images that were actually in use as Featured Media (the most common use of images) and not as inline images.
Hi Larry, when I discussed this with newsroom team, an alternative to identifying a placement specifically as Featured Image was offered, though It may present the same issue. They thought that even if it couldn't be identified as Featured/Embedded, if the link would open the story with the appropriate tab selected (Content if embedded, Featured Media if featured, that would serve the same purpose. If that is not possible, i think the strategy might be to click on Featured first, as the image would be right there if it was, and then look for it in the Content Tab.
Do you have an ETA when Featured media placements for articles will be added (unidentified as such ) in the Appears On list?
Please keep identifying the type of placement under consideration as a future enhancement

Thanks for the feedback Ian. Unfortunately, as of now, we can't tell if an image is in featured media, which does not allow us to surface that designation in the image activity. We will deliver the minimal acceptance solution:
As a user, I want to see what story contains an image from featured media in the image activity, so that a user can find an article that contains a particular featured media image
we will not be able to provide a "contained in featured media" designation
Hi Larry,
I think it the minimal acceptable solution would be to just include stories on which the photo appears as a featured image in the appears on list, the same way use in embedded photo elements are displayed. It would be nice if the usage could be displayed, as what you really want to avoid is having the same image used in the featured image position on too many stories, especially too close together in time, if the usage could be displayed, that would make it easier to determine this. If this delays including featured images in the appears on list, i think we'd be willing to forgo that, so open for discussion on how you would like to handle this.
Thanks!

Hello! I want to clarify one of your requirements stated above. In order to solve the problem of finding the article that contains the featured media image, do you need the "Appears on" list to indicate that it is a featured media image, or it is fine to just show that the particular featured media image is in the story.
Currently, we do not do either. Thanks!
I don't know why it didn't pick up me as the person who submitted it. Please send any updates on this IDEA to ikrantz@inquirer.com Thanks!
