When previewing a story in Ellipsis, the preview appears to show the basic article template. In our experience, it doesn't seem to take into consideration any assigned subtypes, which is how differentiate whether a story gets our basic or longform article presentation (we also have plans to expand the article display templates in the near future).
Showing the story in its truest form during preview would lessen the occurrence of post-publish edits on stories due to layout adjustments and make story authoring more streamlined. It would also allow our newsroom to safely "test" story elements without having to publish in order to see them.

Updated headline from "Story preview displays story as it truly appears on the website" to "Preview draft story by subtype"
In addition to subtypes, preview does not display unpublished photos, float-left or float-center, and other formatting changes.
