Photo Center allows the ability to crop photos, creating a separate image file for that cropped photo. This new file imports the original image metadata and also provides a link to the original image, letting users know that they're looking at a crop.
However, it would also be helpful if there were a record on the original image in the UI, letting users know how many times the image has been cropped and providing links to the cropped images. A potential use case for this might be as follows:
An organization must delete an image for legal/copyright reasons. They want to ensure that any derivatives/crops of that image are also deleted from the system. By means of the UI, anyone with image deletion privileges in Photo Center could go in, identify the original image and all cropped versions of that image and delete them all at once.
Hello and thank you!
You're absolutely right. The key issue to solve here - based on what I've discussed with different users - is the ability to delete all cropped derivatives when deleting the original. If there were a way to "opt in" (via a button, toggle, etc.) to delete all cropped versions of an image when going through the image deletion process, this would be ideal.
Thanks again!
I can see a case being made for knowing what the crops are for the original - if something was cropped badly or they just don't want it to be used any more they might want to delete the crop but keep the original. But it's definitely important to be able to delete all cropped versions along with the original for legal purposes.
Hi Joann - thank you for the idea submission and everyone else for the votes.
It seems like the main problem is deleting the crops associated with the original image. Would a better solution be to give users the option to delete all of the cropped derivatives when deleting the original? Or are there other use cases where a user would want to see the record in the original UI.
Thanks!
