Once PB supports sections (i.e. zones), the chains will be used less and less to control layout and more and more (but not exclusively) for grouping content -- to link across multiple pages or to logically group content that goes together (say, a bank of cards whose height must all be equalized client-side).
In that spirit, the "Display" panel of pb-layout-items in the UI should have a flag whose purpose is to suppress the inclusion of viewport classes in the HTML. It could say somethink like "Use viewports" and by default be checked. When unchecked, perhaps the viewport fields turn gray and are not editable.
This could clarify the intended use of a chain or feature and give a hint to users that they shouldn't waste time messing with stuff, etc.

Why not just add a custom field to the chain wrapper that does this?
